Wedding photography adapts its style in line with ever changing fashions. In this Look Book, the Nikon European Wedding Collective has uncovered an exciting collection of classic, current and emerging trends in wedding photography – all captured on a Nikon camera and NIKKOR lens – and provided tips on how to recreate some of the iconic shots.

Fashion Style

Inspired by high-end fashion magazines and the increasingly fashion forward campaigns from wedding dress designers and tailors, couples may introduce a styled, edgy look to their photography. Just as the bride wears a couture gown, she also wishes to have a “couture style” of photography.

“Using the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G, I was able to capture this fun, effortlessly chic photograph, which wouldn’t feel out of place in a fashion magazine. I chose this lens specifically because of its low aperture (taken at f/2 in this shot) which allowed me to blur the background slightly, just enough to retain the context and environment, while focusing entirely on the couple.”

As trends develop, occasionally we see a style become totally over-saturated, which results in a complete ‘reset’. It’s time to get back to basics with a spotlight on timeless photographs that focus on the couple and exude simplicity, purity and sobriety.

“I experiment with angles to keep simple shots interesting. Here, I positioned myself above the crowd, used my AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G lens and framed it so that only the bride was in shot. It turned what could have been an overcrowded first dance photograph, into this beautifully simple image.”

Picture the scene… as a couple turns to face their guests after reciting their vows, they aren’t greeted by a sea of smiling faces but a wall of camera phones. Guests are so eager to snap that special moment, they forget that they are also an integral part of it. It is no surprise that couples are politely asking guests to switch off mobile phones during the ceremony, enabling the photographer to capture every moment more naturally.
