My vision is to capture beauty through aesthetics, using people, surroundings and most importantly, light to deliver something different.
Creativity is key to everything in photography. You should consciously try and stand out with your ideas, not just technical expertise. In time, anyone can master a five-light setup or intense retouching but having an original and interesting concept that will engage and hold your viewers’ gaze is paramount. Just don’t forget to ensure the subject is in focus.
Before any shoot, make a rough plan of what you want to achieve and stick to it. It can be easy to get distracted or go off plan. This can often result in magic, but there’s the danger that it’s only at the end of the shoot you realise you haven’t quite achieved your original goal.
At the same time, you need be open to what’s happening around you and what your team, especially your model, is giving you during the shoot. It could be that they add something to your idea that takes the concept to a whole new level and in a way that you hadn’t even thought about. Be flexible but focussed.
Your kit is of course important, but also remember that you are taking the pictures. Learn to push the equipment you have; it’s the way in which you, personally, use your tools that will deliver original results. Spend time getting to know your cameras and lenses, and experiment with them until you achieve your signature style.
