When you’ll go to any lengths to get the shot, you want a lens that does the same. Gain up to 160 mm more reach the instant the action demands it.
Always sharp. Always steady. You can extend the 180–400mm (f/4) focal length range to 560 mm (f/5.6) without adjusting your hold on the camera. A solid, well-positioned lever lets you activate the teleconverter with your finger, which is ideal when you want to keep your eye to the viewfinder. The closest focus distance is 2 m across the focal length range.
Benefit from edge-to-edge sharpness and minimal light fall-off throughout the zoom range, even when shooting wide open.
The superior resolving power of this lens ensures consistently superb results. A fluorite element enables high transmission rates with minimal chromatic aberration. VR technology activates the instant you press the shutter halfway and enables shooting speeds up to four stops slower than otherwise possible.* SPORT VR mode delivers a more stable viewfinder image, which is helpful when shooting exceptionally fast action, or when panning.
This lens responds swiftly and precisely to autofocus changes. An electromagnetic diaphragm ensures precise exposures at high frame rates.
Advanced AF tracking keeps pace with fast-moving subjects—even when they’re moving erratically, at random speeds, or approaching the camera quickly. Subject-acquisition performance is superb, even in the peripheral areas of the frame. The electromagnetic diaphragm ensures fast automatic exposure control, and maximum accuracy.
Typical zoom- and focus-ring positions are reversed for more balanced handling. With the zoom ring positioned towards the front of the barrel, directly below your hand, it’s easier to maintain a steady posture when zooming. Both the zoom and focus rings boast a knurled covering that enables a firm grip for smooth control. The tripod collar ring includes bearings to ensure smooth switching between horizontal and vertical orientations. And the integrated tripod foot faces the front of the lens for optimum balance and more comfortable transportation when the lens is attached to a tripod.
Every movable part of the lens barrel is sealed to protect from dust and water droplets.
