I AMKADIR VAN LOHUIZEN

Photojournalist & Lecturer

All stories deserve to be told and I enjoy telling them through my photography. One of my best known projects, the Via PanAm Project, took a lot of effort but I was committed to telling the story and it was my responsibility to tell it the right way.

Biography

Based in Amsterdam, Kadir van Lohuizen is a photography lecturer and co-founder of NOOR photo agency. He has been a professional photographer since 1988, inspiring many people with his work. Kadir decided to pursue a career in photography after discovering his passion for taking photos during school; however it’s his curiosity of the world that really shaped his career.

A freelance photographer for his entire career, Kadir has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his projects on seven rivers of the world, the diamond industry, Via PanAm on contemporary migration in the Americas and ‘Where will we go’ on the human consequences of the rising sea level. Kadir continues to work with NOOR in conflict areas documenting global issues through his photography.

He has received numerous prizes, including two World Press Photo awards, a Visa D’or for his work in Chad and in 2004 was awarded the prestigious Dutch Dick Scherpenzeel Prize for the best reporting on the developing world.

He has twice been a World Press Photo Contest jury member, is member of the World Press Photo Advisory Board and has published four photography books.

In his role as a Nikon European Ambassador, Kadir will showcase his individual style, technical approach and work ethic to encourage others to push their own boundaries in photography.

What’s in my bag?

I have been using Nikon products for 33 years, before I even started my professional photography career. So my partnership with Nikon has lasted longer than almost anything else!

In the past I absolutely loved my Nikon F2, as it was so sturdy and reliable and worked well in extreme weather conditions. I love using the Nikon D810, it has really good resolution, great video functions and is a good size. In the next few months I am planning to shoot with the Nikon D5 - it really stands out to me as it has an incredibly high ISO, which is almost close to night vision. I am also interested in testing its 4K video capabilities.

NIKON D810

This camera takes fantastic images due to its 36.3-megapixel image sensor and ultra-wide ISO range. This means that regardless of what lighting you are shooting in, the camera can adapt and produce beautifully clear shots. It’s also compact enough to be able to easily carry around. This is one of the best professional cameras around.

NIKON COOLPIX A

I use the Nikon COOLPIX A because of its performance and size. This small and compact camera features DSLR technology and does not compromise on quality. I like to use it when I’m looking for a story or ideas and want to quickly capture the moment without any hassle.
